How to transcribe a Google Meet call
You can transcribe a Google Meet call in two ways: with Meet's own transcript feature, or with a Chrome extension that records the audio of your tab. Which one you can use depends mostly on the Google account you have.
Option 1: Meet's built-in transcript
Google lists the editions where this feature is available. Free personal accounts are not on that list.
- Available in Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus and Workspace Individual.
- Supported languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
- It works on a computer, laptop or Android device.
- If “Host management” is on, only the host and co-hosts can start it.
- The transcript is saved in the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the “Google Meet” folder.
Option 2: a Chrome extension that records the tab (T-meet)
T-meet records the audio of the Chrome tab where the call is running and transcribes it on its servers. It does not depend on your Google plan, and no bot joins the call.
- 1Install and sign inAdd T-meet from the Chrome Web Store and create a free account from its Options page. The free plan gives you 1.5 hours of transcription every month, with no card.
- 2Open your Meet call and start recordingClick the T-meet icon and press “Start recording”. You can include your own microphone if you allow it.
- 3Stop and get the resultWhen you stop, you get the transcript with speakers (Speaker A, B, C), a summary in the language of the meeting and a list of action items. Export it as PDF or Markdown.
Built-in transcript vs T-meet
| Meet built-in transcript | T-meet | |
|---|---|---|
| Account needed | Business Standard or higher, Education Plus or Workspace Individual | Any Google account; a free T-meet account |
| Where the file goes | The organizer's Google Drive | Your browser (PDF and Markdown export) |
| Who can start it | Host or co-hosts, if host management is on | Anyone who is in the call, from their own Chrome |
| Languages | 8 languages | Several, including English and Spanish; the summary follows the meeting language |
| Devices | Computer, laptop or Android device | Desktop Chrome only |
Before you record
Tell the participants you are recording. In many countries that is a legal requirement, and it is good practice everywhere. A tab recording does not show anyone new in the call, so it is up to you to say it out loud.
Can I transcribe Google Meet for free?
Meet's built-in transcript is not available on free personal accounts, according to Google's list of editions. With T-meet you get 1.5 hours of transcription per month for free, with no card.
Do I have to be the host?
For the built-in feature, it depends on the host-management setting. With T-meet you record from your own browser tab, so you do not need to be the host, but you should always tell people you are recording.
Does anything join the call?
No. T-meet captures the audio of your Chrome tab, so the other participants do not see a bot or any new participant.
Where is my transcript stored?
In your browser. The server processes the audio to transcribe it and does not keep it.
