How to transcribe a Zoom meeting from your browser

The Zoom desktop app is a separate program, so a Chrome extension cannot capture its audio. Zoom also runs in the browser, and that is the version a Chrome extension can record.

Join Zoom from Chrome instead of the app

  1. 1Open the meeting linkClick the Zoom link in your invitation. If your browser offers to open the Zoom app, cancel that prompt.
  2. 2Choose to join from your browserOn the Zoom page, look for the “Join from your browser” option. If the meeting does not offer it, ask the host, since it depends on how the meeting is set up.
  3. 3Allow your microphoneZoom will ask for microphone access so others can hear you. T-meet only includes your voice in the recording if you also allow it in its Options.

Record and transcribe it with T-meet

  1. 1Start recording on the Zoom tabWith the Zoom tab active, click the T-meet icon and press “Start recording”. Nobody sees anything new in the call.
  2. 2Stop when the meeting endsYou get the transcript with speakers, a summary and the action items.
  3. 3Export or copy itCopy it with formatting into your document, or download it as PDF or Markdown.

Limits to know about

  • Only the browser version of Zoom can be recorded. The desktop app cannot.
  • The browser version may offer fewer features than the app, depending on the meeting settings.
  • Keep the Zoom tab open for the whole recording. If it reloads, the audio capture can stop.
  • Always tell the participants that you are recording.

Can T-meet record the Zoom desktop app?

No. A Chrome extension can only capture the audio of browser tabs, so you have to join Zoom from the browser.

Does Zoom show that I am recording?

T-meet records the audio of your own browser tab, so Zoom does not add a bot or a new participant. You should still tell everyone yourself.

Is it free?

Yes, there is a free plan with 1.5 hours of transcription per month and no card.

Does it work with Google Meet and Teams too?

Yes, with Google Meet and with Microsoft Teams in the browser.
